Taking care of your hair, the crown on the top of your head, is more than a simple shampoo and rinse routine. Some people think that if you just wash your hair every day that it’s already enough. They just concentrate on keeping it clean and basically healthy. While this is a great start, there is more to it than that.

I’m not suggesting that anyone ever overlook the basics. Ignoring them may lead to some serious problems. It’s true that washing your hair every day is a good habit. It not only removes dirt and oils, but also removes dead skin cells and hair products that you put on your hair for styling.

Aside from keeping it clean, we should also bear in mind that we need to keep our hair healthy. Nourished hair is absolutely better than salon pampered hair. Hair maintenance must always involve scalp care as well.

Remember that any problem has a root; in this case it’s at your scalp. A healthy scalp is the key to achieving healthy and manageable hair.

Start by ensuring the cleanliness of your scalp. Use shampoos and conditioners that are gentle and the right type for your hair and scalp. Washing helps unclog scalp pores and allows your skin to breathe, and at the same time nourishes your hair and scalp, minimizing some problems like hair loss and dandruff.

Frequent massaging of the head also contributes to healthy hair. It allows the blood to flow freely to your scalp and calms your muscles, consequently making the pores more flexible and promoting hair growth.

When drying your hair, don’t rub your head with a towel like crazy. Your hair and the cuticles on the scalp are softer and especially vulnerable to damage when wet. Rubbing it hard with a towel may lead to hair breaks, split ends, and damaging your scalp. Try shaking off excess water from your hair and gently stroking it with the towel to avoid it getting tangled with the towel threads.

Use a wide toothed comb with rounded ends to avoid scraping the cuticles on the scalp. It also minimizes the chance of hair breakage as compared to using a fine toothed comb.

Excessive use of hair products may also weaken hair. Hair color, perming products, styling gel, wax, and other hair products have chemicals that may be harsh on your hair when over used.

And if you’re not aware, your lifestyle also plays a big role in your hair’s health. Daily exercise, healthy eating, proper intake of water, and taking supplements are just some of the things that you can do to improve the health of your hair, and ultimately, improve your over all well-being as well.

In some cases, you might need special procedures and treatments for your hair and scalp maintenance, as specific needs do differ from one person to another. For example, people with dry hair should use a moisturizing shampoo while those with a flaky scalp must use an anti-dandruff shampoo and conditioner. There are products specially design for different hair and scalp conditions.

And lastly, consult your dermatologist and hairdresser for your exact hair needs, especially if your hair needs extra special attention and treatments.
